How Fischen.ch more than doubled category page AI-visibility with community content

The challenge: anglers now ask AI first

The way shoppers discover fishing gear is changing. Before they ever open an online shop, many now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview what they need, and they arrive with a shortlist already formed.

For fishing gear, those questions are rarely about specs alone. They are practical: What do I need to get started with pike fishing? How thick does a pike-proof leader need to be? Which rod action suits my target fish? Which soft baits work best in strong current?

AI assistants answer these questions by retrieving sources with real, first-hand experience. If a shop's pages do not contain that experience, the AI builds its answer from whoever does: YouTube channels, forums, third-party blogs, or your competitors.

Fischen.ch is Switzerland's leading online shop for anglers, with over 25,000 products from top fishing brands. The shop is built by anglers, for anglers: every product is chosen by people who actually fish, and the brand is backed by a passionate community of Swiss anglers.

That community is exactly the asset AI-driven discovery rewards. Together with GUURU, the team around Claudia Tenzer, Head of Marketing at Fischen.ch, set out to:

  • Activate the brand community of anglers
  • Connect shoppers directly with experienced anglers for one-to-one advice
  • Turn that same real-world expertise into AI-visible content

The results, at a glance:

  • +35% AI citations across all tested pages after Community Content was published and indexed
  • +104% on category pages, the strongest gain of any page type
  • +50% on product pages, where purchase decisions happen
  • 21.7% conversion rate among visitors engaging with both content and chat
  • NPS of 79 (ecommerce benchmark: 52) and +24% average order value after community chats

This case study walks through the full journey: how Fischen.ch built its expert community, turned conversations into measurable revenue, scaled that expertise into on-page content, and used it to build topic ownership in AI search.

The engine: a qualified community of passionate anglers

Every result in this case study rests on the same foundation: a curated community of real anglers.

Fischen.ch built it in three steps:

  • Invited customers through a dedicated application flow
  • Qualified applicants through fishing knowledge tests
  • Activated the experts across both live conversations and content

The result is a community of verified experts across fishing disciplines, with first-hand product and category experience, contributing continuously so the advice stays fresh.

Take Alessandro, one of the community members: "Angling has been my passion for over 20 years. I am on or by the water as often as possible." In his first four months in the community, he has helped more than 100 customers and shared over 500 opinions.

Step one: Community Conversations that turn advice into revenue

The first step was Community Conversations: connecting shoppers on fischen.ch directly with experienced anglers for personalized, one-to-one guidance.

The community delivers a level of service that is hard to match with any other support setup:

  • 40-second response time and 99.5% availability
  • 4.7 / 5 customer satisfaction (CSAT)
  • NPS of 79, far above the ecommerce benchmark of 52

And the advice sells:

  • 14.5% conversion rate after a chat
  • +24% higher average order value
  • In the most recent 30 days, the community handled 809 conversations, converting at 18.8%

One shopper's feedback after a chat: “He was very helpful when I was asking him questions about lures and different baits. I would definitely recommend him.”

Each of these conversations does more than close a sale. It reveals exactly what shoppers want to know before they buy. That made the next step obvious.

Step two: turning conversations into Community Content at scale

With Community Content, Fischen.ch turns the community's expertise into structured, indexable content published directly on its pages. Two approaches work in parallel:

Organic content uncovers existing expertise from customer conversations at zero additional effort. When a community answer from a live chat is valuable beyond the individual shopper, it becomes reusable on-page content, scalable across products and topics.

Proactive content intentionally creates answers for priority themes and high-intent questions, giving Fischen.ch strategic visibility exactly where it matters most.

The output looks like this:

An example of community content on Fischen.ch

Short, specific, and written by a named person with real experience. That combination is what both shoppers and AI systems are looking for.

Coverage across the full buyer journey

Fischen.ch deployed community content across three page types, each serving a different stage of the buyer journey:

  • Product pages: decision-stage content supporting high-intent purchase decisions
  • Category pages: consideration-stage content building visibility across priority themes
  • Blog content: awareness-stage content capturing broader discovery opportunities

This setup made it possible to answer a question most AI visibility tests skip: not just whether community content improves AI visibility, but which page types benefit most.

The test: building topic ownership around pike fishing

To measure the effect systematically, Fischen.ch and GUURU designed a topic ownership test around one strategic theme: Hechtfischen (pike fishing).

Test setupDetails
ObjectiveMeasure whether community-driven content increases AI visibility
Strategic topicHechtfischen (pike fishing)
Prompt set100 prompts covering discovery, consideration, and decision-stage questions
Content100 community content pieces published and indexed
Scope79 URLs on the fischen.ch online store: product, category, and blog pages
MeasurementDaily AI citations of the tested URLs, measured across a four-week test period, before and after publication and indexing

The prompt set followed the buyer journey from start to finish: broad discovery questions such as "What do I need to get started with pike fishing?", product selection questions such as "Which rod and reel do I need for pike?", and experience-based questions that only a practitioner can answer.

The results: AI citations up across every page type

After the community content was published and indexed, AI source retrievals of fischen.ch pages increased by 34.6% across all tested URLs. Every page type gained.

Category pages more than doubled: +104%

Most category pages are built for navigation, not discovery. They list products, but they answer very few questions, which gives AI systems little to retrieve.

Community content changes their role. Expert answers on consideration-stage themes turn category pages into authoritative topic hubs, and AI systems respond: in this test, AI visibility of Fischen.ch's category pages more than doubled.

Community Content doubled Fischens.ch Category pages AI visibility

Product pages grew 50% where purchase decisions happen

Product pages saw retrievals increase by half. This is the most commercially valuable gain of the test: when an AI assistant cites a product page as its source, it sends a high-intent shopper to the exact page where the purchase happens.

The +50% uplift on decision-stage pages is consistent with what we measured in the Dynafit case study, where expert content on five product pages more than tripled AI citations of dynafit.com.
Blog pages: growth on top of the strongest baseline

Blog pages grew by 9.7%.

Editorial content is already written to answer questions, so AI systems were citing it before the test began.

The contrast holds an insight: the fewer answers a page type contained before, the more community content moved the needle.

Category and product pages, traditionally the thinnest on answers, delivered the largest relative gains.

Google's AI Overview started citing fischen.ch directly

Here is what that shift looks like in a live AI answer.

One of the tracked prompts was the classic entry question: "Was brauche ich für den Start in die Hechtfischerei?" (What do I need to get started with pike fishing?)

Before Community Content, Google's AI Overview assembled its answer from YouTube channels and third-party fishing blogs. Fischen.ch, the shop that sells the complete pike setup and whose community holds decades of pike fishing experience, did not appear at all.

After Community Content was published and indexed, the same query produced a different answer. The AI Overview cited fischen.ch inline multiple times and featured a fischen.ch pike fishing guide as its top source, ahead of the previously dominant third-party sites.

The shift matters beyond one query. It shows AI systems retrieving and reusing Fischen.ch's own community expertise to generate answers, exactly at the moment shoppers form their opinions. With Community Content, this happens at scale, which has a tremendous impact on visibility in the AI search era.

Content and conversations reinforce each other

Community content and conversations are not separate programs. They compound.

Content answers the common questions and builds visibility. When a shopper wants to go deeper, one click starts a conversation with an expert. The result:

21.7% of visitors who engage with both content and chat convert, among the highest conversion rates observed across engagement formats.

And the loop keeps turning: conversations surface new questions, the best answers become new content, the content earns AI citations, and those citations bring in the next wave of high-intent shoppers.

Why community content lifts AI visibility

The test succeeded because the content was the kind AI systems need to answer practical questions well: specific, experience-based, tied to the retrieved page, and written by real, named anglers.

Generic AI-generated FAQ content repeats what already exists elsewhere. Community Content carries details only practitioners know: casting weight ranges for pike rods, minimum leader thickness in fluorocarbon, which rigging variants work in strong current, how to match rod action to a target fish.

For shoppers, this answers real buying questions before purchase. For AI systems, it creates a clear, useful, retrievable source. For Fischen.ch, it puts the brand's own pages into the answers that shape purchase decisions.

What's next for Fischen.ch: the next topics to own

The platform lets Fischen.ch put extra focus on strategic topics and categories, just like they did with pike fishing.

Next, Fischen.ch and GUURU will target high-intent questions in other priority categories, broadening their AI visibility with a community that keeps producing fresh expertise.

Key takeaways

  • High-intent questions can be targeted proactively. Proactive content creation identifies content gaps and buying questions on priority product, category, and topic pages, then fills them with authentic expert answers from the community.
  • AI visibility can be built systematically. Topic ownership, meaning coordinated coverage of one theme across the buyer journey, lifted citations by 35% within weeks.
  • Category pages are a high-leverage opportunity. Built for navigation, they answer few questions today, which is exactly why community content more than doubled their AI visibility.
  • Content and conversations compound. Visitors who engage with both convert at 21.7%.
  • Conversations are a scalable source of content. Every chat between a shopper and an expert can become indexable, AI-visible content at no extra effort.
